Appearance
Kurai has an average height of 6’ 2”, and he weighs a hundred eighteen pounds. His natural hair color is a dark red brown that changes in shading according to the sunlight strength. Kurai’s eyes are a strange shade of pale red, and seem leeched of intensity, that doesn’t stop them from sparkling with mischief however. His hair is quite messy, like he just happened to roll out of bed, yet it looks nice. Some strands curve around his ear or drape around his forehead. The first thing people usually notice about him is that mischievous grin of his and the sparkle in his eyes, like he’s going to play some mean trick on you. He’s quite handsome, yet his personality makes him a pain in the butt. He has a deep voice that is lulling and seemingly sleepy, so he seems to always be in a trance. That’s just him practicing his voice for those times he fortune tells. He doesn’t use it all the time, just…most of the time.
He has two different styles of clothing that he uses: one for when he’s a fortune teller, and the other for everyday wear. As a fortune teller, his usual garb is a long black cloak with a large hood and a black wig. When his hood put up, most of his face is obscured. The wig makes his hair look straight, and it’s a sharp midnight black. The hairs on it are longer than his normal hair length, so the strands cover his eyes, which Kurai thinks makes him seem more mysterious and haunting. He also has creepy habits in his “fortune telling mode”, like seeming to glide along the floor, or laughing evilly for no apparent reason. Some find it funny, and some don’t.
During normal days when Kurai is just being a regular, everyday person, he wears much more casual wear. He likes to mix semi-formal wear with baggy shirts, which adds to his “messy-yet-nice” look. Usually it’s a loose, long-sleeved button up shirt under a blazer that’s unbuttoned. He has a fetish for necklaces and chains, so he always has about three to five around his neck. The only time when he doesn’t have that many necklaces is when he’s in his fortune-teller costume, but even then he has one long chain on his costume, usually a skull or something similar to that. His habit of talking is very noticeable; he likes to use extremely “big” words. Toddlers would get lost in his streams of flowery language, and he tends to ramble for long periods of time. If someone were to ask him to describe a person in a boat in a stream, he gets very detail orientated, trying to describe the way sunlight reflects off the water, or the way the boat bobs in the current.
Personality
Kurai has two different sides to him, one that he usually shows to the world and the other that is reserved for those close to him and for his Pokémon. Usually he has a snarky attitude towards many people and things, apt to acting high and mighty to others. He tends to insult everything, so he acts extremely picky of everything. He wants everything to be just as he imagines it, nothing less. Kurai considering going into fast food restaurants are disasters waiting to happen. Outings like those usually end with Kurai and the manager arguing over the service given at that place. Kurai never backs down in heated arguments like those, being so head-strong, so in the end he is usually banned from the place for life. The only places he could go to eat are those that are high class, and he can’t afford to eat like that all the time, being only a fortune teller. Kurai’s extremely stubborn; if he thinks he’s right, he’s right, and it takes a lot of arguing to make him change his mind. Even then, the chances of winning an argument against him are slim, almost nonexistent. His mind however, does other things other than stay fixated on his own ideas, but plots and creates ways to amuse himself. He likes to play jokes and tricks on people, usually as a fortune teller by the title of Fortune Teller Mystique. His want for amusement is why he is a fortune teller in the first place. To playful Kurai, it’s fun to see how those clients hang onto his every word. His vanity also plays a factor in this, since as a fortune teller, people come to him thinking that he has knowledge of things that extend past the unknown. “Knowing the unknown”, as he likes to call it. Really, it’s just for the act of fortune telling, since his great scheming mind knows that as long as he says something that makes his client happy, he’ll get along fine. He’s conned many people before with fake fortune-tellings that aren’t true, so he’s always on the move to other places before people get suspicious.
Now onto his good side. When people are able to get to know Kurai as a person, they can see that there’s a kind person who loves to joke around. He can be described as light-hearted when he’s like this. He may be extremely picky with everything, but he’s observant to those small details people miss when they’re in a rush. He likes things that move at his own pace, and since he’s always acted more slower than most others, he has gotten the talent of noticing things that are barely noticeable. Small signs that give away a person’s true feelings are presented to him easily, so in a sense he does have a talent to fortune telling. But he doesn’t use his observance to his advantage while fortune telling. To him, fortune telling’s just a way to make money. He doesn’t have the want to actually see into someone’s character and predict what could happen, even though he is capable of doing so. He’s kind to those he has learned to like. He may be disdainful to many, but he isn’t one to ignore someone who has taken the time to get to know him and even likes him. He likes to have fun, even though his jokes are usually a bit mean or at the expense of others. Kurai’s plotting mind also promotes his creativity, so he has a great imagination and that is used for fun activities he does with his family, friends—if he has any—and his Pokémon.
History
Kurai is an only child born to two breeders of Caligo Region who each met each other during their journeys to discover Pokémon. They lived in Oberon Town, where things seemed quiet and peaceful except for those occasional ghost types that come along. He was always raised around Pokémon his whole life. His parents worked as daycare people and breeders, helping trainers raise their Pokémon and breed eggs for them. It was a happy, quiet life for Kurai, and he helped out with his parents as much as he could. He loved Pokémon as much as his parents did, especially those with mischievous personalities and ghost types. Being around Pokémon a lot, he has a lot of knowledge about all types of Pokémon. His parents always taught him to love Pokémon and care for them like family, so whenever he sees mistreatment of Pokémon, he acts just as how he would in dirty restaurants: snarky, disdainful, and extremely sarcastic in a way to insult the person who is mistreating Pokémon.
His parents never understood why he was such a mischievous child, since both parents were quiet people who tended to keep to themselves, and always tried to teach him manners. Don’t dance on the table, don’t play with your food, don’t be rude to that girl across the street. He never actually listened, and still played little tricks occasionally, or just acted extremely sarcastic and rude. There were even those times he snapped back at his parents; and he got into tons of trouble for that. His parents pretty much gave up on making their boy “perfect” once Kurai became an adolescent. He knew his lines enough, so he didn’t openly insult teachers or his elders, just the usual gossip behind their back. He never liked school, and he failed at math, but in other subjects passed them. His specialty was always English and History, since he loved Shakespeare and learning about ancient civilizations. Shakespeare plays a huge part in his speech pattern, he just loves to speak in such a superfluous way, and only sometimes does he ever use what he calls “common words” like “nice” or “mean”. He likes those with description, so he ends up sounding like a silly poet.
His Pokémon were with him for most of his life, during his childhood, through school and now as he moves on to adulthood. His Misdreavus, Miasma, is his best friend and they met when he was only seven. Kurai had gone exploring in the ghost tower of Oberon Town with his neighbor, just because he was bored during a lazy summer day. His parents were gone for a business trip, and had told his neighbors to keep an eye out for their son Kurai. He had told his next door neighbor he was bored, so his neighbor suggested a visit to the ghost tower, just to see if any Pokémon were around to meet. Following the adult there, he had to admit he loved that creepy atmosphere the place created. It was thrilling to wonder what lay in the dark corners. The adult with him, however, didn’t seem to feel the same way, and she was shaking in fear. Kurai just stared at her, what was her problem this was fun! When she suggested they leave after just staying for five minutes, he demanded why. When his neighbor couldn’t give an answer that Kurai found good enough, he continued to walk on, while his neighbor became even more flustered since he was in her care. Running after Kurai she tried to catch him, grabbing his arm, but as she did, she let out a scream of fear, since something had pulled her hair. Kurai watched in fascination as a Misdreavus appeared seemingly out of thin air. It giggled to itself gleefully, obviously happy that it had made the woman give such a strong reaction. The caretaker for Kurai that day was not amused the least and she began to make threats to the Pokémon. Kurai found it to be hilarious, and it really was just a small joke usual for Misdreavus. When Kurai got over the initial hilarity of what the Misdreavus did, he got defensive of the Pokémon as his care taker began to threaten the Misdreavus. He heard about how she would “make you feel my wrath”. The Misdreavus seemed extremely frightened as well, cowering in fear and had a sorry look on her face.
Kurai wouldn’t stand by to watch a Pokémon get hurt like that, even if the Pokémon had done something wrong to a person. It wasn’t an attack, and nobody was hurt, according to Kurai, the Misdreavus did not need to be so scared like that. Standing in front of the Misdreavus in a protective manner, he said to his neighbor that the Misdreavus should be left alone. He continued questioning the woman, asking rapid fire questions that the lady had barely any time to answer. Being so confused, she just lost all the anger that she felt in the beginning at the Misdreavus, and went outside, while also telling Kurai to come outside with her. Turning around, she didn’t actually wait for him to follow, and so Kurai stayed behind for a bit to say his goodbye to the Misdreavus. However, instead of leaving right after he made sure she was okay, it tugged on his hair as well, and just held on. Wherever Kurai went, the Misdreavus followed, and even when he got all the way home, it stayed with him. Kurai was actually happy that a silly Pokémon like Misdreavus wanted to stay with him. His parents allowed him to keep the Misdreavus knowing that he would take good care of the Pokémon. He nicknamed the Misdreavus Miasma since to him, that word sounded cool. When he learned the meaning of the word, he found it was such a coincidence that the word seemed to match the Ghost type’s looks. Kurai and Miasma became extremely close friends.
Kurai’s love of ghost types started with Miasma, and his parents could see it. Their son and Miasma would always be together every day. Miasma would show up to play with Kurai when he was bored, or just hung around with him, each of them enjoying the other’s company. When Kurai got busy with school, Miasma would still hang around when he was doing homework, even trying to help him out in any way she could. Her help usually was just poking at things or trying to write something, but ending up just making herself look silly. To Kurai however, it released any stress he felt and that helped him finish up the homework. Small breaks with his best friend helped him a lot. Miasma was with him all his life, through all the ups and downs. She was right with him when he graduated from high school, along with his family. The Misdreavus had become a member of his family. Kurai’s time in college wasn’t that long, just one year of learning about ancient religions and astronomy. Two things he was very interested in. Those interests made him consider being a fortune teller, especially because he was always into mysterious and supernatural things, like for example ghost types.
Not staying in college for long, Kurai just followed that initial thought of being a fortune teller, so he set off to become a travelling teller and trainer. He loved Pokémon, so why not combine the two so that he could have some adventures? His two Litwick, Sha and Eni, were brother and sister given to Kurai from his mother as eggs. He hatched both of them during his college years, and the duo is extremely close to Miasma and Kurai. His team is one that is his family, and he loves them all like he would a brother or sister. They also play a part in his fortune telling act, helping out in special effects when he reads his crystal ball.
