Appearance
Ava stands at five feet six inches tall. She is lean enough, fit, and has light brown skin. Her hair is dark brown. Her remaining eye is a golden-brown. She wears a blue-green shirt that clasps up the front, with a belt at the middle. The sleeves stop at her elbows. Her pants are simple, black fabric, well-made, and her boots are sturdy leather. Over what remains of her left eye, she wears a black eyepatch.
She has bandages wrapped around her throat and forearms, to better hide the scars that mark her. She received them in a run-in with a wild zangoose, and is embarassed enough by them enough to hide them. They pain her in cold weather, so in winter, she often wraps a scarf around her neck and warmers over her arms. She does not like rain, either, and will often choose to stay inside in such conditions. Vast quantities of water make her exceedingly nervous, so she owns no swimwear.
Personality
Ava is not a kind person, by default. She has a fierce temper, and it will often flare in tense situations. Unfortunately for her, but fortunate for everyone else, she is unable to speak. Therefore, her frequent curses and snide remarks are made in sign language, and are generally not understood, or ignored. This tends to upset her further, and so she has learned that she is not above using slaps upside the head or stomping on feet to prove her point. She is also quite gifted at pantomiming her intentions, although most gestures are rude. She is able to make a few intelligible noises, although it seems to pain her to do so, so if she is making said noises at you, she is probably angry enough to ignore the pain entirely.
When it comes to a softer side, Ava would claim that she has none. She is fierce and angry, and she hardly ever shows any emotion more positive than general irritation. On the few occassions she has reason to show these feelings, she will often times do so in a very subtle fashion. A tiny smile, a silent laugh, perhaps. When she is sad, she is very quiet- a strange thing to say, seeing as she is mute, but she is quiet in that she does not speak with her hands. This is unusual for her, because for a mute person, she is extremely 'vocal'.
On the subject of romance, Ava is unimpressed. She has had very few romantic experiences in her life, so far, and none have been what she would consider 'pleasant' or 'not horribly aggrivating'. She is also of the opinion that most men would not like a woman with such horrid scars, and is therefore supremely skeptical of anyone with 'romantic' intent towards her. In the off chance someone did manage to get under her skin, she would probably ignore it as well as she could, hoping it would go away. She is not the best at handling her gentler emotions.
History
Ava was born, in Lacewing town, to Charles and Suki Eddingburg. Both were skilled trainers in their own day, and they welcomed the baby girl into their lives with high hopes for her future. Her older brother, Gibson Eddinburg, was already showing promise as a potential trainer. As she grew, Ava grew very close to her sibling. The two spent quite a bit of time together, playing and wandering about their home. Where one went, the other would be seen to follow, although Ava was quite often the leader of their expeditions. Most in her town would have called her a happy child.
But as time went on, the two grew apart, as such things will happen. They began to bicker more consistently, as siblings do, grew further and further away from one another. Finally, it came time for Gibson to become an official trainer, and he began to study and receive lessons from his parents for this very thing; during this time, Ava and he fought fiercely, and the end result was that Ava ran off one night to prove that she could be just as good a trainer as he was. She set out to catch a Pok?mon with no help and no one but herself about. She was ill-prepared for the fury of a wild Pok?mon whose territory had been invaded.
She was attacked by a zangoose on her foolhardy mission, lost one eye, and suffered terribly wounds at her throat, losing her voice. She was also badly injured at her forearms and back, but before a final blow could be struck, her brother arrived and fought off the wild Pok?mon, suffering a grievous wound in the process. He helped his sister back to their home, where their parents found them on the front lawn. They were rushed to the hospital. Ava survived; Gibson did not.
After the event, Ava began to withdraw further into herself. She learned sign language, to communicate, but became a cranky and all-around irritable person. She felt a general wariness for all people, and even most Pok?mon, especially those with sharp claws. Eventually, she decided to honor her brother's memory by becoming a trainer, herself. She swore to become the strongest she could, to preserve the honor of their family, and to remind herself everyday of her brother's sacrifice for her.

The air was hot and muggy, and Ava was quickly growing irritated with the humidity. She narrowed her eyes against the sun as she stepped outside, lifting her right arm to shield her good eye and take a look around. It was early enough that most people were still asleep, including her parents; Ava had chosen this time to leave for good reason. Over the years, her relationship with her parents had become distant, and she knew they would only get on her nerves with their goodbyes, if she had waited. She had left a simple note to say goodbye; she had told them weeks ago she would be leaving to start her journey, soon. She already had a trainer card; what reason was there to wait?
She sighed faintly, a quiet, hoarse noise, and stretched her bandaged arms out before her. She had slept well the night before, and she felt well-rested now. She was used to early mornings, and she quite liked them; it was the best time to be out of the house, and not be approached by anyone who wanted to have some sort of conversation with her. She didn't appreciate being talked to like she was crippled, either, and the whispered secrets about her spoken behind her back did nothing to quell this general irritation with most of society. She knew that the lab would probably be open this early, but even if it was, she was more than willing to wait a bit.
Silently, Ava checked her boots, to make sure they were on and laced properly, and then set off down the road. There was a generally sleepy feeling in the air, this morning, and it was almost enough to make her want to yawn and crawl back into bed for a few more hours. But no; all of her plans began with her setting off early, before anyone was up to waste her time. She would need to be ready to not give into those temptations, anyway; the life of a trainer wasn't always easy. She could hardly turn around and crawl back into a sleeping bag if there was some giant wild Pok?mon trying to fight with them.
'Them'. Hm. it felt strange to think of that word, but soon enough, it would be true. She would not be a solo act, any longer, and she tried to ignore the feeling that bloomed in her chest at the idea. Soon enough, she would have her first partner Pok?mon, and they would begin to travel together. She knew it would take time; the Pok?mon would have to learn sign language, or hand gestures, just as her parents had when she had lost her voice so long ago. She also knew she would probably have to be a bit more patient with the poor thing than she was with the general populace. All of these things to learn, and so much ahead... even to Ava, it was an invigorating thought.
She stopped as she came to the door of the lab, staring up at it. It was hardly as daunting as it had seemed when she was a small girl. Reaching up, she rapped sharply on the polished wood. The future awaited.
