Appearance:
Tall, beautiful, red-haired, blue-eyed, p a l e, long limbed, confident, sultry.
If Carly walks into a room it's hard not to notice her. She's very tall and willowy and unmistakeably beautiful with her mane of flame-red hair, long eyelashes and high cheekbones. Her hair is definitely among the most distinctive things about her appearance, being very long, wavy and a rich coppery red tumbling around her face and down her back. Her skin is an unblemished porcelain white, kept that way through strict sun avoidance, and she has cool blue eyes inherited from her estranged mother. As a child, Carly was adorable and endearing in a cutesy way; now, as a twenty year old young woman, she is pretty and alluring in a distinctly modelesque way and often the recipient of admiring glances, much to her father's chagrin. She wears ultra-fashionable couture clothing of vibrant greens, blues and yellows and has an elegant ring bearing her gym's sigil.
Carly has a naturally sultry face with a cheeky smile and eyes that light up easily with mischief, but often strangers mistake her confidence for arrogance and cast aspersions based on her physical appearance - it's not an uncommon thing for people to assume she's air-headed and therefore not take her seriously. She has a flowing, graceful stride and is able to hold herself with a great deal of elegance, though this can be taken as bolshy self-pride. It's hard for Carly to blend into the background, but fortunately she generally dislikes to be overlooked, and it's no wonder tongues are sometimes set wagging when it comes to Carly Cole.
Personality:
Confident, witty, flirtatious, teasing, flippant, flighty, cheeky, fun-loving.
Once a precocious and mischievous child, Carly has grown into a very passionate, bright young woman always with a ready retort and light sense of humour. She is very confident, perfectly comfortable in her own skin, though considering her looks this may not seem displaced. However, some consider her carefree nature a mark of arrogance and her confidence one of over-pride. Still, Carly tends not to care much what other people think of her, however, unless they happen to be particularly significant other people, and generally greets hostility with a flippant indifference, like water off a duck's back. Whether it actually hurts her or not is harder to tell, since Carly is quite adept at showing only what she likes people to see of her.
Naturally out to enjoy herself, Carly is an expert flirt. She has been popular with boys since she was no more than twelve years old, which her father claims is the reason for his grey hairs, although she has high standards when it comes to men. She might be a tease, but she is actually rather inexperienced with relationships and relies on what she has gleaned from books and films more than first hand experience. She prefers to give off the impression that she is a romantic expert, though, and is not beyond giving out sagely advice to her friends. She is excellent with people, since she is used to dealing with strangers on a daily basis, and very sociable, witty and wry. In this way, she is much like her mother rather than her father, though she refuses to acknowledge the similarities to the mother who left her as a child.
Carly loves Pokémon ferociously and enjoys her training, although she has an inherent flightiness that makes her lose interest in her activities fairly rapidly. Before she became a gym leader, she had experimented with Pokémon breeding, Pokéblock design and Pokéball technology, but lost interest in all three. The gym has been her most longstanding professional commitment, though she also dabbles in fashion modelling and Rapidash racing on the side. She is also an excellent pianist, though this is a little-known skill of hers and she rarely bothers to practise these days. Carly's Pokémon are very dear to her and she prefers Fire-types over all others, although she hasn't had much chance to experiment with other types yet. She very much stands on her own two feet and is highly independent, though also very fond of her father and little brother.
History:
Born and bred in Ithiel City, Carly was the first child of Samuel and Karen Cole. He was the gym leader of the city, running the then-new Fire Gym with his powerful team, while she worked as a nurse at the old Pokémon Centre. They were newly married and in their early twenties when Karen got pregnant with Carly, and neither of them was expecting children so soon. They reacted differently, however, with Samuel being surprised and pleased and Karen being horrified and dismayed. Carly was born that year on Christmas Day, and her father has ever since called her his greatest Christmas present. Her mother had to give up her work to take care of Carly as Samuel was very busy with the gym, but at first everything was fine. Carly would play at home with her mother during the day, and she would run to her father for a big hug when he came home from work, just as any child is wont to do.
While she was growing up, Carly had some good friends in Ithiel City, such as her best friend Olivia Cooper, whose mother worked at the PokéMart, and Margot Cartwright who had a pet Meowth. But none of these were quite as remarkable as her relationship with one particular little boy, whom she remembers very strongly. He was from a faraway city with snowy mountains and a frozen lake (Carly later identified this as Fionola City), so they only saw each other at holidays, but since it was every holiday, they got to know each other very, very well. The boy's parents were old friends of the Coles, so naturally their children came into close contact. That boy was Caulton Stuart, who was five years older than Carly with gangly limbs and a shock of white hair. Technically they 'met' when she was in her cradle and he was five, but her first memory of him is being four years old and having him steal her favourite Rapidash toy and throw it in the well. The next year, aged five, she took his Jynx poster and had her baby Charmander set fire to it. Their relationship continued in this manner over the years as they grew up, bickering like brother and sister.
When she was seven, Carly did get a little brother, whom her parents named Robbie. She didn't much like having to share her parents' attention with a new baby, but she didn't realise anything was seriously wrong. That is, not until her mother left one morning without saying goodbye. Carly was too little to understand much other than that her mother had left her and wasn't coming back. Her father was strained and tired and unhappy, and Carly tried her best to cheer him up, but he was never quite the same after Karen left. He kept going with the gym, but his heart wasn't much in it. Nonetheless, he kept up his acquaintance with the Stuarts and continued taking Carly and Robbie to Fionola City every Christmas and some summers.
Soon, Carly was reaching her teenage years and had her own Pokémon. She'd received her first Pokémon, her Charmander, when she was six. He came from her father, being the offspring of Samuel's own Charizard, and she took care of him from the time he hatched from his egg. A Ponyta followed this after Carly caught one roaming the side of the Hoenn mountains and lured it home with a lava cookie at age nine. At age thirteen, her two Pokémon were already strong and impressive for such a young trainer. Carly's father was pleased, and knew that his daughter was shaping up well to take over his gym one day. Caulton, being five years older, was always in possession of stronger Pokémon than Carly which annoyed her no end, but she had her own advantage in that her Fire Pokémon were dominant over Caulton's favoured Ice-types. Their relationship had changed somewhat by the time Carly turned thirteen anyway, since he had already reached adulthood while she was just turning into a young woman.
Although she did do that early. Thirteen-year-old Carly was already tall and pretty with an innocent-imp smile and thick curly hair, and looked perhaps two years older than what she actually was. Her Pokémon were coming along too, especially after she caught a tough little Litwick deep in a cave one day and he became a firm member of her team. Then Carly had a serious growth spurt around that time and caught up a lot of the height Caulton had over her by the time she turned fifteen and reached her full model-level height. He, however, was twenty and pretended to be far too old to bother with little girls. Carly, though, was already aware of the effect she had on young boys, given that she had already become a leggy, shapely, pretty-faced young woman and no doubt made Caulton's life a lot more difficult with rather coquettish behaviour.
Carly is now twenty and Caulton is twenty-five, and they have not seen each other for some time as their respective positions as gym leaders has left them busy, meaning that they have not managed to keep up with their regular visits to one another's hometown. Carly's little brother, now twelve and a half, is a constant pain in the neck for her, but she loves him deep down and knows he's a tough trainer already. Her father handed the gym over to her when she defeated him in battle when she was seventeen, and he lives a quiet life in their comfortable home. Carly works as a model on the side and puts most of the proceeds towards the gym, which she is very proud of. She sometimes leaves to visit her friend Mr Edenhall in the Fallow Forest - where she recently caught a cheerful young Deerling (whom she doesn't use in the gym) - or to check in with Professor Alder in Lacewing Town, but her main focus has been on her own city and she is fiercely protective and proud of it. Overall.

"Who's this boy in the picture?"
Carly, thirteen years old, looked up from her sprawled position on her bed. She squinted at the framed photo her best friend Olivia was waving at her and wrinkled her nose, identifying the image quickly.
"That's just Caulton," she replied, waving a hand idly. She looked back down at the magazine that was open before her, but she sensed Olivia's interest spiking. Carly sighed, rolling over and raising an eyebrow at her friend, who was smirking and flicking her blonde hair aside impatiently.
"Caulton?" Olivia asked, grinning almost wolfishly as she bounded over to the bed with the picture still clutched in one hand. It was one taken some time last year in Fionola City which showed Carly leaping onto a young man's back, impishly cackling as she flung snow down his neck. He looked as if he were pretending not to be amused, but a snort of laughter seemed to be escaping him even as he winced away.
"Yes, Liv, Caulton" Carly replied, her tone admonishing. "Whatever you're thinking, stop it. Caulton's like my brother. We met when I was like, one month old - seriously, I've known him longer than my actual brother! And-" she broke off dramatically, her voice lowering as if she were revealing some great scandal, making Liv's eyes widen just as she knew they would. She smirked, pleased with herself, and added "-he's seventeen," she finished, her voice still purposely hushed. She stood up and grabbed the picture to put it back on her shelf. Olivia, almost squirming in excitement, bounced up and scrutinised the photo once again.
"Seventeen!" Olivia repeated admiringly. "Wow, Carly, you even hang out with seventeen year olds?" Her tone was half impressed, half envious. Carly rolled her eyes - Olivia always was easily impressed - and tugged her friend away from the picture, sighing theatrically, but not before she'd placed the soft wooden frame carefully in its place and stolen a long glance at the image it bore. She turned away and flounced towards her mirror.
"Really, Liv, there's nothing exciting about it. It's just Caulton! Caulton's a pain in the neck, I promise," she snorted, glancing at her reflection and patting her fiery hair critically.
"I bet he fancies you," Olivia sighed, eyeing Carly up and down. "Everyone does."
"Please, as if that would ever-" Carly broke off, a mischievous gleam lighting her eyes. "Actually, he probably does," she announced smugly. The two of them dissolved into giggles.
