Marco had only been in the Caligo region for a short time now, but he already found himself heading to the Pokémon lab to get his first Pokémon. He, unlike the many other trainers who came to get their first Pokémon, had a purpose. He came here to help stop the Black Spades in whatever nefarious plot they may have.

Back in Hoenn he heard rumors of the crime syndicate. Though many people believed they didn't even exist. He believed in the detective that still thought there may be trouble out there. He was going to find out what they are up to, and stop them. It all started here, on this sunny morning in Caligo.

He arrived at the lab's front door. It was a pretty nice looking place. He was a bit interested in what options he would get for a first Pokémon. He always liked the Pokémon Bouffalant. Mostly because he had similar hairstyles with the normal type Pokémon but also because of how strong they were. If it were an option, he'd pick it without any hesitation.

The teen knocked on the door after a moment, wondering if anyone would be inside this early. It wasn't like there was an open and closed sign lying around so if no one answered he'd just have to come back and try again later. Though that would mean he'd be wasting valuable time he could've spent training his first Pokémon.

The teen wore what he would usually wear on a morning like this. It wasn't too hot, yet it wasn't cold. He still found it hot enough to walk around shirtless, wearing cargo shorts and sandals. His Sharpedo necklace dangling from his neck.

"Hello? Is there anyone in there?"

Sounds of random destruction came from the back garden of Professor Laurel's laboratory.

There was snorting, bellowing and the occasional sound of something breaking, accompanied by the exasperated yells of the Professor himself.

Cirra merely watched the scene and snorted in amusement at the Professor's losing battle. Laurel chucked his hat at the great Tropius in mock annoyance, and sighed to himself. Oh, it was not a great morning for him. He'd just received a shipment of starters to hand out to new trainers, but nobody had told him about this. The enormous whirlwind of destruction that was this particular Pokémon. It was all he could do to protect his petunias from its stomping. How on earth would he find a trainer for such a beast?

Speaking of which, a voice summoned the Professor from his rather thankless task, and with a sigh he gave his savaged garden up as a lost cause, swapping an exasperated glance with Cirra before he wandered into the lab, unlatching and opening the front door. A young man stood outside, dressed in shorts and sandals, and the Professor smiled, already knowing what he would ask for.

"Hello, hello, welcome" Laurel said, ushering the youngster in with a friendly wave. "I take it from your eager expression and youthful verve that you're a new trainer after his first Pokémon, then," he said brightly, already fumbling in his pockets to see what he was carrying. He inspected the first few Pokéballs, muttering under his breath. "No, no, these won't do at all... no, good grief, when did I buy that?" He shook his head.

"One moment. I'll just see what else I have." He whirled away in a swirl of white labcoat and disappeared into the storeroom, scanning his long shelves of minimised Pokéballs all neatly lined up in a row. He picked one off the shelf, humming as he scanned the row, picked up one more and then exited the cupboard. "I believe these may be suitable..." he held out two Pokéballs. "It's a young Stantler, or perhaps this Aipom? They're both eager and friendly Pok-" a huge crash interrupted the Professor and he spun around.

"Oh, no it's that blasted..." he glanced at the young trainer. "I don't suppose you want the great beast that's currently tearing up my begonias? He's a Bouffalant that arrived this morning. Well-meaning, but somehow a complete disaster zone in that garden..." Laurel gave an exasperated shrug.

Marco stood awkwardly at the door while he listened to the chaos inside. He wondered if now may be a bad time to try to pick up his first Pok?mon. He was about to turn to leave when the door popped open. On the other side of it, a man in a lab coat. He looked as though he was really stressed with his work. Marco was thinking of asking him about his troubles, but he figured that it would just distract the man from the chaos inside.

"I take it from your eager expression and youthful verve that you're a new trainer after his first Pokémon, then,"

Marco nodded, the man began to fumble through his pockets. Marco was still a bit worried about the chaotic noises coming from within the lab. The man indeed looked like he could use a break. The teen felt pretty sorry for him. He pulled a few pokeballs out of his pockets, muttering under his breath as he looked at him. He seemed to be pretty swamped with his work. After a moment he gave up on the pokeballs he had on hand and excused himself, and went back into the lab for a moment.

He soon came back holding two pokeballs. Marco didn't want to trouble him, so he decided that he'd choose something from whatever the man had on hand. It was the least he could do to help out the Pok?mon professor.

"It's a young Stantler, or perhaps this Aipom? They're both eager and friendly Pok-"

A loud crash interrupted him. Marco was a bit more curious of the sound coming from inside the lab now. What could have been making all that ruckus? He figured it would be best not to pry, but he was still curious.

"I don't suppose you want the great beast that's currently tearing up my begonias? He's a Bouffalant that arrived this morning. Well-meaning, but somehow a complete disaster zone in that garden..."

Marco's eyes sparkled. He was doubting that the man would have a Bouffalant but he did. He was a bit curious as to why the man would keep such a wild Pok?mon in a garden. Marco doubted that the beast was destroying the garden on purpose, he just needed to be tamed a bit, and Marco was willing to put in the effort.

"Sure, I'd be glad to take the Bouffalant off your hands."

He was more excited about training Pok?mon now that he was going to get a Bouffalant. He began to imagine all the victories that he would have with the bash buffalo Pok?mon. It was all starting now, he couldn't help but smile a bit.

Professor Laurel's eyebrows rose in surprise. "Really! Well, magnificent, how fortuitous that you should come today," he boomed happily. "I was wondering how on earth I would find a trainer for such an big and, ah, energetic creature, you see, but here you are! Most trainers go for the manageable, smaller Pokémon, but I think you'll suit each other quite spectacularly." Laurel gestured for Marco to follow him and led him through the lab until they reached the back garden where the Bouffalant was still loose. "Did I introduce myself? No? I'm Professor Laurel. And you are Mr...?" He paused, briefly, before carrying on talking, his usual hive of cheerful energy.

"He wouldn't get into his Pokéball earlier," Laurel went on to explain ruefully once they came to stand on his patio. "And this is where he was dropped off. Hence the untimely end of my rhododendrons," the Professor sighed, looking at the flayed remains of his garden. The Bouffalant noticed the two of them and his eyes almost seemed to light up, and he charged over in a cloud of mud and the Professor's lawn. "Alas, they're not meant to be kept in domestic gardens, but I imagine he'll calm down once you're out travelling." He handed the Pokéball to Marco. "You get acquainted, and I shall find you some supplies."

Laurel dipped back into the lab and rummaged around in a box to find a trainer starter pack, then ambled back out to the boy. He offered the items one by one, explaining them in the way in which he was so well practised, having set off so many youngsters in just the same way as this boy.

"This is your Pokédex; it shall be invaluable when you witness new Pokémon. It will tell you all you need to know. Simply point and press." He handed it over. "These are Pokéballs; I'm sure you already know how it works - merely throw them at a wild Pokémon." He counted out five and gave them to the young trainer. "That's about all I have to give you, unless you have any other queries?"

"Really! Well, magnificent, how fortuitous that you should come today,"

The man seemed surprised that Marco would have picked such a wild Pok?mon. Marco had lived in the wild for so long he found that Pok?mon were much easier to tame now than before he went into the wild. He was sure that the normal type just needed some fresh air. That would calm him down.

"I was wondering how on earth I would find a trainer for such an big and, ah, energetic creature, you see, but here you are! Most trainers go for the manageable, smaller Pokémon, but I think you'll suit each other quite spectacularly."

Marco was glad to take care of the doctor's problem, he could tell that the man was busy and was just getting stressed out by the bash buffalo Pok?mon. The man motioned Marco to follow him, and so the pair walked through the lab to the garden out to the back garden, where amongst a pile of destroyed shrubs and flowers, an excited Bouffalant stood. Once their eyes met the normal type charged over happily, further destroying the man's garden.

"You get acquainted, and I shall find you some supplies."

Marco nodded, taking the pokeball from the man. He slowly reached to the Bouffalant's head, petting its bushy afro. It reminded him much of his own. Marco smiled and the large Pok?mon stomped happily. After a moment Marco pointed the pokeball at the Pok?mon, returning it.

"You're not so bad, you just need some fresh air."

He brought the pokeball closer to his face, looking at it adoringly. The man brought a pokedex, along with a few pokeballs to the teen. Marco took them and thanked the man. With nothing else to discuss with him he decided he'd head out now. He needed to get his Bouffalant into some fresh air before it went berserk again.
