In the past, Barley Ranch was just a quiet family ranch that rested on the outskirts of Kepa. It really wasn’t much to look at and very few people even knew it existed. Old Man Reese lived here for many years with his wife, Mrs Reese, and their two Herdier, Jasper and Rosa. Barley Ranch was spread out over acres upon acres of golden plains, more often than not heavily crowded with all kinds of Pokémon. You really never knew what you would find out there, but it had always been closed off for catching Pokémon or battling them. After all, the ranch was intended to be a small haven for all Pokémon to relax in safety.

Eventually, however, this small ranch became more popular. Those travelling to Kepa wanted to see it and the Pokémon that inhabited it. Fences went up to protect the inhabitants, a visitor centre was built, and soon there was a breeding shop run by the Reeses' moneymaking grandson, Richard. Richard is more eager to battle than his grandparents and shows it off with his team of herding excellence.

Due to the number of Pokémon that can be found on the ranch, there are eggs widely available for collection by the Reeses. While some are easily identified as Pokémon eggs of the native species, others are mysteries which even the discerning Mrs Reese can't identify. As a result, Richard, in an attempt to find homes for them in exchange for a sizeable profit, collects the eggs from his grandfather and puts them up for sale. While there is no guarantee on what will come out of the eggs, the Ranch is the best place for hopeful egg raisers to start their careers.
